How To: Design Your Bridal Makeup Look

The Bride-to-Be's Guide to Designing a Makeup Look

Hello, brides-to-be!

Your wedding day is one of the most magical moments of your life, and you want everything to be perfect – especially your makeup. Finding the right bridal makeup look is an exciting journey, one that should reflect your personality and enhance your natural beauty. So, let’s dive into everything you need to know to nail down that perfect look.

First thing’s first - Understanding Your Style

Here are some questions to ask yourself.

What’s your personal style? Understanding your everyday style will help guide your bridal makeup look. Spend some time looking through your wardrobe and pinpointing the styles and colours you gravitate towards. Take a look at your everyday makeup bag, what does it contain? Are you a full glam wearer, or something a little more subtle? Or, do you not wear any makeup at all? Finding the answers to these questions gives me an understand of what you like (and, importantly, what you don’t like). Asking yourself these questions will give you a clearer idea of what makeup styles you might feel most comfortable and beautiful in.

Gather Research - Inspiration is Key

Inspiration is everywhere – from bridal magazines to Pinterest boards, and Instagram feeds to celebrity weddings. Create a mood board of looks that catch your eye. Pay attention to the details: the colour of the lipstick, the shape of the eyeliner, the overall glow. Notice if there are recurring themes or styles that you’re drawn to. This collection of images will be invaluable when at your trial!

Let’s Consider Your Wedding Theme

Your wedding theme and venue play a significant role in determining your bridal makeup. An outdoor beach wedding might call for a more natural, dewy look, while a grand ballroom event could suit a more dramatic, glamorous style. Keep in mind the time of day and the lighting, as these factors can affect how your makeup appears in photographs.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Understanding your skin type is crucial for achieving a flawless finish. Is your skin oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? I’ll be asking you these questions at your makeup trial, so I can choose the right products that will last all day and keep your skin looking its best. If you have any skin concerns like acne, rosacea, or pigmentation, be upfront about them. And don’t worry - over 16 years working as a makeup artist I’ve seen every skin type and condition! These are all things that will make up your makeup consulation.

Choosing Colours That Complement

Your makeup should harmonise with your wedding colours, your dress, and most importantly, your complexion. Consider your skin tone and undertones when selecting shades for your eyes, lips, and cheeks. If you’re unsure, I can help you find colours that will enhance your natural beauty and make you glow, that’s why it’s really important to have a trial run so we can test these out!

The Trial Run

Your makeup trial is your dress rehearsal. It’s the perfect opportunity to test different looks and fine-tune the details. Bring your mood board and be open to suggestions! Communication is key – don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t feel right. The goal is to leave your trial feeling confident and excited about your bridal look.

Test Your Makeup for Longevity and Comfort

Your makeup needs to withstand tears, hugs, and dancing. Ensure that the makeup feels comfortable and doesn’t feel heavy or cakey. A setting spray can work wonders in keeping everything in place. Again, booking a trial and giving your makeup a test run will help with this.
