The Ultimate Makeup Collab

The fashion makeup collaboration that has sent shockwaves through the industry... drumroll please! It's none other than makeup legend Pat McGrath and Creative Director of Maison Margiela, John Galliano, joining forces to bring us a makeup masterpiece that’s had the industry in a chokehold these last few weeks.

John Galliano and world-renowned Pat McGrath are no strangers to one another, with their collaborations going way back to the early 2000s. Their latest collaboration has seen countless interpretations from artists and enthusiasts alike. The chatter between artists, the detective work to figure out exactly what was used, and, more importantly how it was used, really has made the makeup community come together in awe.

Let’s take a closer look. A modern take on porcelain skin, models danced the runway looking like ethereal, extraterrestrial beings. Glass skin taken to the next level. This peel-off high shine mask illuminated, and ultimately set the artistry world alight.

Makeup Artists across the world were united in the search for the ultimate porcelain, glass like skin. What did she use? This is a little more than your standard highlighter - so what was it? Chatter was rife, was in Kryolan’s Liquid Glass? Was is Glycerin? Celebrity Makeup Artists Erin Parsons posted a TikTok in which she seemed to have hit the nail on the head. The finish was a mix of a few different gel masks, diluted with water through an airbrush, dried, and layered.

Pat and her team treated us to an in depth makeup tutorial live on Instagram and showed us the look from start to finish in detail. These were some of the noted products her and her team used -

Let’s take a walk down the fashion memory lane of Pat McGrath & John Galliano’s past looks, stopping at Fall 2007, when Galliano was with Dior. Winging it back to the Jazz Age, Dior’s 60th anniversary went and brought the 1920s to the fashion forefront with deep hues, metallic eyes and thin brows, a look that sparked a berry toned lip revival, and spotted on a lot of my students era makeup mood boards too!

Here’s another Pat throwback, this time to spring/summer 2018. The pair joined forces again at Maison Margiela, this time pairing back the skin with the ultimate statement lip.

Swinging it back to another Pat & John collab, this time for 2017 couture fashion week. The mix of material and experimental shapes helped to create this pop art inspired look.

Pat McGrath, the makeup sorceress herself, known for creating otherworldly looks that push the boundaries of conventional beauty, has brought her A-game yes again to this collection with Maison Margiela. And when you pair that with Galliano's avant-garde approach to fashion, you know you're in for a treat. The fashion and beauty worlds collided again, and it’s always a work of walking art.

So thanks Pat, for bringing some much needed excitement to makeup, for bringing the community together in our detective work, and ultimately reminding us that no one does it as well as Pat does.
